Local opticians launches community book exchange
A Clifton opticians is encouraging customers and the community to share their love of reading with the launch of a new book exchange and monthly audiobook competition.
Specsavers in Clifton Down Shopping Centre, which is locally owned and run, has created a ‘little library’ outside the store, inviting the community to swap books, discover new reads and connect through storytelling. To celebrate the launch, the team has partnered with independent bookshop, Heron Books, to offer customers the chance to win a free audiobook each month.
The initiative was spearheaded by Isabel Wilde, in-store trainer and optical sales assistant at Specsavers Clifton, who is passionate about audiobooks and supporting independent businesses. Isabel’s colleague, contact lens manager, Tracy Hawken, who is an artist outside of work, has also designed some free bookmarks which are available in store.
To enter the competition, customers simply need to scan a QR code displayed on posters outside the little library and submit a review of their favourite book. One winner will be selected each month to receive audiobook credits.
‘We’re really pleased with how positively the community has responded so far,’ Chris Child, store director at Specsavers Clifton, comments. ‘It’s lovely seeing people stopping to browse the books, leave recommendations and sharing stories with one another. Reading means something different to everyone, and we hope this project helps create a small community space people can enjoy.’
The team has already seen strong engagement from the local community, with books regularly being exchanged and customers making use of the bookmarks available in-store.
